Top news!!! Dec 28th, 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

NEW Michigan Girls High school State Championships. It will be held March 10th at Fowlerville High School. This event will be ran just like the MHSAA was running it. Cost will be only $10.00. We hope that in time the state will see the success of the tournament and take it over and hold it along side the boys tournament at the Palace. We will also add a MS and Ele school tournament at this event.

FUNDRAISER must end and have all funds and order forms turned in by Feb. 1st 2012 for us to get uniforms before nationals. Please email me if you need the form, I will fwd you the PDF file.

USA CENTRAL REGIONALS will be in Michigan this year and it will have a women’s division. Ill post a link for details and make a FB event closer to the tournament.

WE ONLY HAVE 14 WEEKS till USA girls nationals, Folkstyle national duals, and we even get to watch the University National Championships on Sunday. Evnt is March 21st-25th

I was able to speak with Kent Balio and get the USGWA GREAT LAKES tournament moved back one week so all of the girls going to Oklahoma City won’t miss the opportunity to wrestle in this event. This event will now be in Standish March 18th.

NATIONAL DUAL EVENT IN MICHIGAN
I’m working with the Indiana Women’s Director, a family and the school in Constantine trying to hold a NE Girls National Dual Tournament (WAR OF THE ROSES) and if we can work out the dates and the use of their school. We hope to put together dual teams in ele, MS, and HS and get teams from OH, IN, IL, and maybe more. Everyone will wrestle and cost will be low. Hoping to fit this event in Feb after HS regionals weekend. we hope to have a boys event here as well for all the families that have brothers that want to wrestle and not just watch all day.

Q & A with Rachels McFarland MWW’s MVW

Q & A with Rachel McFarland..

As the 2011 wrestling season came and went Michigan Women’s Wrestling had an extremely good year with over 80 All-American honors and 14 of them were National Championships. The team traveled well over 10,000 miles just to out of state national events, international tournaments, and training camps. We also had three athletes get the opportunity to travel out of the country with Team USA. Rachel was one of these athletes and wrestled extremely tough at the Cadet World Championships in Hungary making it to the Bronze medal match where she was defeated. As you can tell we have some amazing girls wrestling in the state of Michigan but Rachel stands alone in the effort, personality, and accomplishments for the 2011 season. I believe she is one of the best role models we will have for the younger girls coming up. Here is a Q & A with Rachel about women’s wrestling and the 2011 season.

  • Q 1. When did you start wrestling, what age were you, grade and why did you start?

I started wrestling when I was 13 years old, and in the 8th grade. I was influenced to wrestle by my little brother, and wanted to give it a try.

Q 2. How has wrestling affected your life?

Wrestling is my life. Everything revolves around it. It takes up lots of time, and it is a top priority.

Q 3. What do you think wrestling has done for you as a person?

Wrestling has made me mentally and physically stronger. It has taught me that you have to make sacrifices to achieve your goals, but it’s all worth it in the end.

Q 4. What did it mean for you to win your first National Championship?

I made lots of improvements from the years past, and all my hard work and dedication finally paid off.

Q 5. Name three things that you learned or the things you will always remember about wrestling in Hungary at the Cadet World Championships?

Go into competition with an open mind. Different countries have different wrestling styles. Win or lose, be happy to be there, and enjoy yourself.

Q 6. How important is wrestling freestyle for a girl?

Wrestling freestyle is extremely important for girls because all women’s wrestling beyond high school is freestyle.

Q 7. What advice would you give to a girl just starting out in wrestling?

At first, you may have a hard time fitting in, but keep your head up and work hard, you’ll gain the respect you deserve, and eventually will be excepted.

Q 8. What were the determining factors in choosing Oklahoma City University for you?

Every aspect of the school and wrestling program couldn’t have fit me any better.

Q 9. What training have you done in the past that has made you into the wrestler are you are today?

Everything you can imagine; practice drilling, technique, conditioning, eating right, live situations, live matches. I have attended many practices and camps in my career.

Q 10. Can you name the five biggest influences in your wrestling career?

God, Dad, Coaches, Mom, and Brother, Luke.

Q 11. Can you describe your best experiences participating with Michigan Women’s Wrestling?

    FILA Body Bar Nationals 2011

Q 12. If you were to do anything differently in your wrestling career what would it be?

I would have begun wrestling sooner.
